The La Plata Mountains are the southernmost sub-range of southwest Colorado's San Juan Mountains and are situated between the towns of Durango and Mancos. They're often overlooked due to the grandeur of the mountain scenery to the north, but they are really no less spectacular if you take the time to drive the back roads and hike the trails that lead into them. Most visitors to the area are locals and they are ecstatic that they get to keep their "secret" mountain playground to themselves! I was fortunate that the five days I spent there coincided with the peak of the wildflower bloom. It was an incredible sight to see.
